One-year-old Chloe Clark is one of the hundreds of children waiting on a life-saving organ transplant.

She was born with a "broken heart" and has spent more than 300 days of her short life at Norton Children's Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, in heart failure.

"They spent a little while looking at her heart, and Jay goes 'something is not right,'" said Mackenzie Clark, Chloe's mother.

Jay and Mackenzie Clark found out that at 20 weeks pregnant, their baby girl had a serious heart condition.

"It was tricuspid atresia which is a version of a half-heart syndrome," Mackenzie Clark said.

On Aug. 16, 2021, at 8:05 p.m., four-pound Chloe Clark was born one month premature.

"They whisked her right away to get IVs set up, give her an echo which is an ultrasound of the heart basically make sure she was ok," said Mackenzie Clark.

Chloe's heart was not the only problem.

Doctors discovered she had another life-threatening health issue and had to have surgery at just three days old.

"She had an undiagnosed diaphragmatic hernia which is a hole in your diaphragm," Mackenzie Clark said.

Doctors were able to fix it, and Chloe went home from the hospital, but not for long.

"June of 2022 we found out that she was in heart failure," Mackenzie Clark said.

On Aug. 5, Chloe was placed on the organ transplant list.

She has been at Norton Children's Hospital in Downtown Louisville for more than 300 days waiting for a new heart.

Through it all, Chloe's parents say she is a bright spot during the dark days.

"She's always happy, she's always giggling, she's always doing something silly, blowing kisses or learning something new," said Jay Clark, Chloe's father.

But sadly, Chloe is not alone.

There are hundreds of other children just like her.

"In America, there's over 100,000 people waiting on a lifesaving transplant, about 2,000 of those are children," said Executive Director Shelley Snyder, Donate Life Kentucky.

That is why Donate Life Kentucky kicked off a new campaign this year called "Save My Human."

It uses pets to encourage people to become organ donors.

Chloe was pictured with the Norton therapy dogs for the campaign.

"There are children, there are adults, there are so many people waiting, and they need the gift of life and everyone can register and give people hope," Snyder said.

That is exactly what the Clarks are holding onto, hoping that one day soon, their daughter will receive the gift of life through organ donation.

"You can change the way that eight other children's story ends. You can save seven or eight other lives with one donation," Mackenzie Clark said.

"I can't think of a better gift," said Jay Clark.
