Cincinnati State's 'Roots to Boots' initiative at risk after federal funding cut
A local program aimed at launching young people into careers managing greenspaces is now at risk after federal funding was unexpectedly slashed.
"Roots to Boots," an initiative led by Keep Cincinnati Beautiful in partnership with Cincinnati State, provides education and financial support to Cincinnati Public Schools graduates interested in green jobs.
The year-long program was designed to connect students with sustainable career paths without the burden of student debt.
Executive Director Jonathan Adee says the benefits of greenspaces go beyond aesthetics.
"Green spaces can reduce violent crime by 12 percent within a one-mile radius," he noted.
But recently, the organization was told that federal funding for the program would be cut by DOGE efforts because it's categorized as a "climate change initiative."
Despite the setback, Adee remains optimistic.
"We believe that the community is going to step up to the plate and make sure that this program continues," he said.
He's calling on local businesses especially those who need workers trained in sustainability and land management to help fill the funding gap.
The future of Roots to Boots now rests in the hands of local supporters.
