Some Florida Disney workers plan to walk off job after company's handling of 'Don't Say Gay' bill
Some Disney employees said they plan to walk off the job Tuesday.
This is in response to the company's handling of the so-called "Don't Say Gay" bill controversy in Florida.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Disney's CEO hosted a hastily scheduled virtual meeting with leadership and employees on Monday to talk about how the company made a mistake by not taking a public stance against the "Don't Say Gay" bill.
But as one cast member told Orlando sister station WESH that the LGBTQ community and its allies want more than words: They want action.
As visitors arrive to Disney on Tuesday, some Disney employees said they'll be walking out.
"This is a human rights issue," a Disney cast member named Nicholas said.
Nicholas did not want to reveal his last name but said he's upset about how the company has reacted to Florida's so-called "Don't Say Gay" bill.
"We want action and not just continued lip service saying, 'We love you. We stand with you,'" Nicholas said.
Disney's CEO Bob Chapek was silent at first and did not issue a public condemnation of the legislation. He later apologized and said the company is pausing all political donations in Florida.
But Nicholas said the LGBTQ community needs more assurances.
"He says he's sorry. Well then mean it, continue to fight for us and stand with us and not donate anymore at all. Not just a pause, but a complete shutdown of any future donations to any candidate or campaign that stands against the LGBTQ community," Nicholas said.
Nicholas said he바카라 게임 웹사이트s participating in the Tuesday walkout.
"Letting the company know: This is where we stand and we demand, the hashtag is on my Zoom background, #DisneyDoBetter. They need to continue to do better for all of us," Nicholas said.
Nicholas said he's worked for Disney in Florida for four years.
"I love Disney. I absolutely love my job and what I do in bringing about magic," Nicholas said.
Now, he said he hopes the company works to gain his and others' trust back.
"I absolutely love it. But what I don't love is inaction. What I don't love is a company saying they stand with us and then they just do the complete opposite," Nicholas said.
Disney cast members WESH spoke with said their online portal showed a virtual event scheduled for Monday to discuss the "Don't Say Gay" bill with LGBTQ employees and allies.
But now their portal shows the event is happening Tuesday, the same day as the walkout.
WESH reached out to Disney but did not hear back.
