The Justice Department released its early Tuesday morning detailing President-elect Donald Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
Most of the new information comes from Special Counsel Jack Smith, who led the investigation, summarizing the steps and case's conclusion. For the first time in the report, Smith connected the evidence to the charges he brought and explained why he didn't bring other charges.
Smith said the investigating team "stood up for the rule of law" when looking into Trump's efforts to overturn the election results.
In the highly-anticipated report, Smith also stood behind his decision to bring criminal charges against Trump 바카라 게임 웹사이트 charges that he says could have won a conviction had voters not reelected Trump.
"The evidence shows that Trump used lies as a weapon to defeat a federal government function foundational to the U.S. democratic process," Smith wrote.
Trump was indicted in August 2023 on charges of trying to overturn the election, but the case was delayed and ultimately dropped as longstanding precedent says a sitting president cannot face federal prosecution.
Trump quickly to the report Tuesday morning, maintaining his long-standing defense that he is "totally innocent" and calling Smith a "lamebrain prosecutor."
The other case involving charges against Trump for stealing and hiding classified documents was also dropped, though the other two co-defendants who have been charged may still stand trial.
Attorney General Merrick Garland wants that report to be made available only to leaders of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees for private review. The report's release is currently being fought in court.
