Massachusetts father describes quest for drinking water in Gaza
Hey, it's *** Buddha cal uh giving this recording at uh 517 pm local time on day, uh 24 of the war. Um October 30th. Um, we've run out of drinking water yesterday, um, as *** desalination station that's nearby that we've been, um relying on, has run out of fuel to run the generators. Um So what we did is, uh we, we roamed the main roads and streets here in Rafah City where we're staying, um, to look for basically what's become the norm now, which is uh trucks or uh horse carts that are loaded with big tanks, uh, maybe about 1000 L 2000 L tanks that are filled with uh drinking water that's been uh taken from, from the very few and limited desalination stations that are still operational in Gaza. Uh And we stood in line. Uh I think it was for maybe about two hours to fill one gallon. Um They tried to kind of minimize, uh or they tried to limit the portions. Um So ours was *** gallon. Um, and we're hoping that would last us for the rest of the day today and, and, um, for most of tomorrow until we could, uh, we could find another, uh, uh, place to get drinking water from, in terms of our situation, we're still sheltering in place in Rafah City in southern Gaza. And, um, it, it, today, basically there's been an increase in, in artillery shelling. Um, that's been the most noticeable update, um, near the eastern side of the city where we're staying. And, um, also, um, every once in *** while we would hear heavy caliber, um, gunfire that we believe is, uh fired from tanks. And our biggest fear now is that the ground invasion is, is imminent, um, near the neighborhoods where we are because we've heard of the reports of both uh intense artillery shelling as well as gunfire exchanges, um, as an invasion is happening or during or right proceeding an invasion. And that's basically what's been happening in northern Gaza and, and today there's been tanks that rolled into central Gaza at least for some time. And what we're hearing in the press is that they pulled out. Um, so we're staying hopeful that tonight will be another safe night for us. Um, at this point, we, um, we don't care much about how intense the bombing is. Um, as long as we come out alive in the morning and, um, as of today, and as of this recording, still no update from the State Department. Other than that, there's no information about when we could expect to exit Gaza. Um, we've been hearing reports that, um, it's more complex and, uh, to get us out of Gaza and, and we're hoping, um, that, uh, *** resolution will, will take place as soon as possible. Again, it's been 24 days and we've been in touch with the State Department, um, since day one, few hours into the war. Um, and our frustration continues and, and builds up every day that, uh, we're still stranded here and, and risk our lives. Um, still staying in the same house with my wife Wafa, my son Yusuf, um, my sister Haneen and her three kids, all are Americans and, um, along with 40 other people in total 10 Americans in the same house, um, and managing to stay safe so far, um, and trying to secure resources for our day to day.
