New debt collector rules
The Consumer Finance Protection Bureau approved a new set of rules, explaining that debt collectors have been working with outdated standards that have not been changed since 1977. One of the biggest changes? Debt collectors can now email you, text you and contact you on social media.
The changes to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act clarify that debt collectors cannot post anything publicly. It must be a private message. Collectors must clearly identify themselves and offer an opt-out option for receiving further messages.
Another rule clarification is on phone calls. Debt collectors were already restricted to only seven calls within seven days, but the new rule clarifies that calls, which go straight to voicemail, are counted as contact by phone.
