Okay, this is Nasa's perseverance rover. It landed on mars just back in february, but now, after roving around and dropping off the first helicopter to ever take to the orange tinted martian skies, it's now hunting for signs of life. Perseverance landed in the 25 mile wide Guerrero crater, an area experts believe used to be a lake. They also believe the lake was made by a meteor impact which would have created an environment that could harbor living organisms. Here's ken Farley martian rover, scientists to explain. And the other important aspect of this is that we are looking very, very far back in the history of the solar system, and what that means is that life would not have had much of a chance to advance very far. And that's why we always say that we are looking for evidence of potential microbial life. And since landing, the car sized rolling robot has been practicing taking samples in preparation of gathering bits of the lake bed to await transit back to planet Earth. And so far things have been pretty interesting as they've already begun to find clay, a sure sign that water once filled the area. But you shouldn't expect little grey men to start photo bombing. Perseverance is panoramas because on earth are example of one about how long it takes life to evolve on Earth advanced life, which you might consider to be sea life like, you know, fish and corals and these sort of things. They didn't appear until relatively recently. So we are appearing very far back in the history of life and we only expect if there is life that it would be microbial. Mhm.

"The team determined a location, and selected and cored a viable and scientifically valuable rock. We did what we came to do. We will work through this small hiccup with the lighting conditions in the images and remain encouraged that there is sample in this tube."The rover uses a rotary-percussive drill and hollow coring bit to drill into rocks and collect samples just a bit thicker than a pencil.
