This Day in History: Pluto loses planet status, demoted to dwarf planet in 2006
Do you remember the big news about Pluto in 2006? No no no, not that Pluto, this Pluto the planet, or should I say, the dwarf planet on august 24th 2006. The ninth planet from the sun was *** officially demoted to *** dwarf planet by *** group of astronomers. And as astrophysics PhD student skylar Grayson will tell you not, everyone was thrilled about the decision. There's *** big outcry about Pluto being demoted. People had sort of *** emotional connection to it. You grew up learning about the nine planets and then all of *** sudden there's eight. But not only did the public disagree with the decision, it was very controversial in the space community as well. It all started when the International Astronomical Union or I ***. You voted to change the definition of *** planet, but only 5% of all of the I. Au. Members actually participated in the vote. So many professionals in the field didn't actually agree with, but the decision still stood. And under the new definition, in order to be considered *** planet, it has to meet these three criteria. First, it has to orbit the sun. Second, it has to be nearly round in shape and third, it must have gravitational control around its orbit, meaning it has to be big enough to have cleared any other objects of *** similar size away from its orbit and Pluto doesn't meet that third criteria, so it was automatically demoted to *** dwarf planet. *** lot of the reason for this definition was to keep things simple and have like *** main group of eight planets and then dwarf planets and then other objects in the solar system. And before you feel too bad for Pluto, Skyler says that astronomers are still studying it and giving it plenty of attention. We're still doing the same stuff with Pluto that we would, regardless of whether it's called *** planet or dwarf planet.

Pluto only meets two of the criteria required to be a planet. Because it is not gravitationally dominant, Pluto is considered a dwarf planet.

However, only 5% of the world's astronomers voted on the redefinition, sparking controversy in the astronomy community.
