Retailers are now offering COVID-19 booster shots
With approval from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, booster shots of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine are now available for eligible Americans. During a White House COVID-19 Response Team briefing Friday, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy said three at-risk groups are eligible for a third dose of the Pfizer shot: anyone 65 or older, those with medical conditions putting them at high risk of severe illness with COVID-19 and people who work or live in settings that put them at a higher risk of exposure to COVID-19.Retail pharmacies moved quickly after the boosters were approved. CVS Health announced Friday that nearly 6,000 of its locations started offering appointments for a third dose of the Pfizer vaccine. But because federal health officials only authorized Pfizer's booster shot, "individuals who initially received the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) COVID-19 vaccine are not eligible for a booster at this time," the company said. Those who choose to go for the booster shot will be asked to "self-attest to their eligibility" outlined by public health officials, CVS said. They also must be recipients of Pfizer's initial two doses.Walmart and Sam's Club are also administering boosters in more than 5,100 of its pharmacies.A news release from the company says Walmart and Sam's Club offers a digital scheduling option for vaccination appointments, but will also have walk-in availability as supplies last. A digital vaccine record is also available for anyone who receives their COVID-19 vaccine at Walmart or Sam's Club. Walgreens made a similar announcement about its plans to begin administering Pfizer's COVID-19 booster shots. "Walgreens has played a vital role in responding to COVID-19 as millions have turned to us as a convenient vaccination destination and critical point of community care," John Standley, the president of Walgreens, wrote in a news release. "In addition to providing booster shots, our pharmacy teams remain readily available to advise patients, address questions and co-administer flu and COVID-19 primary vaccines to help protect our communities."Walgreens is also encouraging anyone who comes in for a COVID-19 booster to consider getting a flu shot at the same time."Based on CDC guidelines, patients are able to receive their COVID-19 and flu or other vaccinations on the same day," the Walgreens release says. "Patients are encouraged to get their initial COVID-19 vaccination series or booster along with their flu shot during the same visit, saving time and providing protection against both viruses."
