As soon as that happens, they spend all the money on it before you can, if you haven't used the gift card in *** while, you don't even need the actual card anymore. You just need the number on the back. That's how the scammers are doing it. So what can you do check the amount on your card right now. You can either do that by calling the number on the back of the card or going straight to the retailer's website to check the balance there. If you find *** zero balance, ask the person who got you the card for *** receipt and if you bought cards get *** receipt you can call the customer service number, explain what happened.
