When Elon Musk finally starts sending human beings to space, he's going to make sure they look really cool doing it. Early Wednesday morning, Musk posted the first picture of the SpaceX spacesuit to Instagram, promising "more in days to follow." The suit, with its pristine white body, charcoal grey accents, and strong, structured lines, is a work of science-fiction craftsmanship.
Musk nodded to its difficult creation, saying, "Was incredibly hard to balance esthetics [sic] and function." He also said the suit has been tested in a double vacuum and is ready for use.
The spacesuit will be worn by astronauts during transportation in SpaceX Dragon Capsules launched from Earth to the International Space Station, according to . It is designed to protect their wearer in case the capsule depressurizes during travel, not for spacewalks. For now, the first group set to wear it in space will be the astronauts NASA sends to the ISS in its first with SpaceX, scheduled for early summer of 2018.
