Tearful reunion: Woman thanks deputies who saved her life
Many of us have strolled to the mailbox, to find a piece of mail demanding we report for jury duty.
Charlotte Wood got that piece of mail for the first time earlier this August.
On Monday, she walked into the criminal court building in Polk County, Iowa to carry out her civic duty. She started feeling light-headed and thought anxiety was getting the best of her, so she called her daughter.
"That's when it really went bad," Wood said. "I couldn't stand, and finally, it got to a point where I couldn't sit."
Wood fell out of her chair with her phone in her hand and dropped to the floor. She was suffering from a blood clot in her lungs.
"After that, I really don't remember anything until I was at the hospital," Wood said.
The last thing she remembers is Polk County deputies coming to her rescue and quickly calling an ambulance.
"I feel like they were angels right there at that moment to save me," Wood said.
Wood said her family has been through a number of tragedies lately, and she couldn't stomach the thought of no longer being there for her family, which makes her even more thankful for what those deputies did.
"I would like to say thank you face-to-face for what they did," Wood said.
Wood had no idea that sister station KCCI arranged for the deputies who saved her life to come by and surprise her during the interview.
Wood cried as deputies Alex Hoffman and Brett Medders walked up to her.
"Hi Charlotte, how are you doing?" Hoffman asked.
"Good. Thank you so much," Wood replied.
With tears flowing, Wood thanked them for their life-saving actions. These deputies will tell you that they were just doing their job.
"We're just glad she's OK. That's our main goal at the end of the day. That's why we wear the uniform and go to work. We want this kind of outcome," Medders said.
Two days after Wood thought she was going to die from a blood clot, she could thank the heroes that saved her life.
"Thank you guys so much," Wood said. "You're angels in my life, no matter what."
