New 21+ age policy coming to The Banks in downtown Cincinnati
The Banks is implementing a new age access policy on weekends starting Friday.
Officials with The Banks announced its "public plaza" will only be open to those 21 years or older on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. There will be enhanced security, ID check and extra staffing starting this weekend.
The public plaza is from Freedom Way between Joe Nuxhall Way and Marian Spencer Way and Walnut Street. Great American Ball Park and both sidewalks on Joe Nuxhall Way are not part of the plaza and do not have restrictions.
"This proactive measure is designed to enhance public safety, crowd control, and the overall late-night experience in the entertainment district," officials said in a post.
The initiative is privately funded, with all of The Banks retailers and apartment owners spending the last two years to come up with the effort. It's estimated to cost the retail/apartment stakeholders $250,000 to put it in place.
"We want to do everything we can to maintain the safety of our patrons and our tourists," Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval said.
While those under 21 are welcome in The Banks earlier in the day, officials said access to the Plaza will be restricted to those 21 and over. Bike racks with signage will be placed around the designated area.
Officials said if a Reds game or stadium event ends after 10 p.m., those under 21 can access the Plaza with a parent who has an ID and is 21 or older.
"Valid government-issued photo identification will be required to present to private security to enter the Plaza area," the post reads.
ID checkpoints will be implemented at Joe Nuxhall Way/Freedom Way and Walnut Street/Freedom Way and will be clearly marked and staffed by trained security personnel.
The new age policy will continue on weekends through the summer and evaluated periodically by the city of Cincinnati and local stakeholders.
Brandon Dabreau is a manager at The Park, a bar in the center of the zone that will be subject to the new policy.

The announcement comes shortly after a shooting that resulted in a chaotic scene near The Banks plaza area over the weekend.
The head of security at The Killer Queen told 바카라게임 that, on the very same night as those shootings, adults tried to bring guns into bars at The Banks seven times.
"It's a band-aid on a bullet hole. We'd love to see some more, of course, you know, I think putting up check points and saying hey, we don't allow this kind of stuff, will deter some of the crime, but at the end of the day, if they're not checking bags, if theye're not wanding people, if they're not using metal detectors, they're sitll just going to pass through the checkpoint and say i'm here with my gun," Jordan Stamper, head of security at The Killer Queen said.
