Brian Thompson's widow, Paulette, is also from Iowa. She grew up in Webster City, and later graduated from the University of Iowa. She says she's heartbroken, but is remembering her husband for the loving father, son, and husband that he was. <"BRIAN WAS A WONDERFUL PERSON WITH A BIG HEART AND WHO LIVED LIFE TO THE FULLEST. Years before Brian Thompson was the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, he was a beloved graduate of South Hamilton High School in Jewell, Iowa.Thompson graduated in 1993 from the high school before attending the University of Iowa. "The fact that he came from small town Iowa and still was able to achieve what he achieved, that says a lot about his drive," said Todd Coy, the principal of South Hamilton Middle and High School. Thompson walked the halls of the same building that remains in Jewell. Coy, Thompson's health and physical education teacher, remembers his time there well. "He was humble, an outstanding student," Coy said. "He was liked by all, which was a testament to why he was probably our class president. He was homecoming king his senior year." Coy said Thompson played the trombone for the school band. He was also selected for all-state band. Thompson excelled in anything he focused on, both academically and elsewhere."He was our medalist. He was our number one golfer," Coy said. While everything he did academically and in other areas was great, Coy said what stood out the most about Thompson was his ability to be a friend to all. "If you would look at his '93 classmates, they would all tell you that they knew he was going to strive to be something big," Coy said. Thompson was shot and killed Wednesday morning in midtown Manhattan. Police described it as a targeted attack by a shooter outside a hotel where the company was holding a conference."It was just very sad and tragic," Coy said.
