Family trying to rebuild after devastating campground fire in Whitewater Township
A husband and wife are recovering after a devastating fire in Whitewater Township cost them their home and killed their two pets.
The flames destroyed their camper at Indian Springs Campground and then spread to their car and to a neighbor's camper.
Charles and Christine Adams were both taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and second-degree burns after the fire on Tuesday afternoon.
Their son Charlie Adams spoke with us about their road to recovery.
"Nothing is left. Everything is gone," said Adams while surveying the damage.
Adams tells us his dad and stepmom narrowly escaped the flames.
Sadly, their beloved dog and cat did not make it.
"He said, you saw some smoke when he was sitting on the couch watching TV, and he went to investigate. And just within minutes, it was, everything goes up in flames, is too hard to react to," said Adams.
His father was recovering from a knee surgery and relies on a walker for help getting around, so getting out was difficult.
"My father, he's a disabled veteran who served in the Marine Corps," he said.
Adams says his father fell down several times trying to put the fire out.
"The physical injuries are nothing compared to the loss that they had," Adams said, referring to the loss of their animals.
He says the pair left with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
The Red Cross is helping the family, but they'll need a lot of support to rebuild.
Mrs. Adams is a traveling nurse, and that camper was their home. The couple will also need a new car and is dealing with medical bills.
